Multi-sport players face uphill battle

When most hockey people are “on record” about hockey prospects playing other sports, they encourage it. Our factory for Minnesota college players and NHL picks, the Upper Midwest High School Elite League, has an explicit policy protecting the status of its players who also participate in Fall high school sports.

Further, recent scientific research has shown that playing multiple sports decreases injury risk and increases performance levels. Injury risk is reduced because different sports stress the development of different parts of the body, and an athlete’s performance is heightened both by the more balanced musculature and as well as brain development, where exposure to differing perceptual challenges (as opposed to those of just one sport) promotes development of better motor skills, peripheral vision and cognition (what we might call “hockey sense”).

State Tournament needs new life

The two major national sporting events that capture the nation are the Super Bowl and the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Super Bowl captivates every household from Bellingham, Wash., to Miami, Fla. The NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament grips most everyone from Bangor, Maine to Chula Vista, Calif.

The 2013 Minnesota Boys’ State Hockey Tournament is here! The hockey tournaments have a long history of entertaining every household from Worthington to Baudette. Whether you are from St. James, Aitkin, South Haven or Ray, Minn., you could always count on the hockey tournaments to be on your TV at home, at a restaurant or at work.

From the stands to the ice

With motivation ranging from wanting to share the joy of the sport with their kids to simply improving their health, 25 skaters ages 17-52 have dedicated eight hours over the past four Saturdays in the classroom and on skates at the Sun Prairie (Wis.) Ice Arena. As members of the inaugural class, the “Pre-Introduction to Hockey” clinic is the area’s first-ever focused on teaching adults how to play the game of hockey.

24th Annual Let’s Play Hockey Expo set for March 8-9

 

The 24th Annual Let’s Play Hockey Expo, the world’s largest consumer hockey show, returns to St. Paul RiverCentre on Friday-Saturday, March 8-9. Held in conjunction with the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Hockey Tournament, the Expo is FREE, open to the public and offers a sneak peak at the hottest hockey equipment, camps, accessories and training devices from around the globe.
