MIAC to look into forming an incident review committee

In response to an on-ice incident at a MIAC men’s hockey game on Oct. 27, in which a Bethel University player was hit from behind into the boards, the MIAC athletic directors agreed at their meeting on Nov. 13, to place on the agenda at their March meeting the possibility of forming an Incident Review Committee. This group would determine if additional suspensions are warranted following incidents at MIAC sporting events. Currently there is no committee that can administer additional suspensions to a coach or player.

A Q & A with Gopher freshman Hannah Brandt

College Hockey, Inc., gets new boss at crucial time

By Chris Peters

It has been nearly six months since Paul Kelly was forced out of his role as executive director of College Hockey, Inc., by the Hockey Commissioners Association. On Aug. 28, the organization announced that Mike Snee will replace the former NHLPA exec at the helm of college hockey’s marketing arm.

Snee’s hiring couldn’t come at a more crucial time for College Hockey, Inc., but is it too late? With the NHL’s CBA negotiations well underway, college hockey really needed some guidance and someone to attempt to have a voice in the changes that are sure to come out of a new collective bargaining agreement, over and above what they’ve already done.

While the timing may not be beneficial for CBA purposes, Snee still comes in at a time of transition. The college landscape will be changed forever after the 2012-13 season and with that change will come great uncertainty.

A call for change to MIAC discipline policy

By Doug Johnson
Let’s Play Hockey

An on-ice incident occurred on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Fogerty Arena in Blaine during a MIAC Men’s Hockey Showcase game between Bethel and St. Mary’s. At the 11:20 mark of the second period, St. Mary’s forward Mike Hill was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, a five-minute major for a check from behind plus a game disqualification for a hit which looked to be precipitated by a questionable check just seconds earlier.

The Bethel player, Garrett Windle, lay motionless on the ice with no feeling in his legs. He was rushed to the hospital and was released the next day. He did suffer head and neck injuries and it is undetermined when he may return to action. The St. Mary’s player also had to sit out their next game for receiving a game disqualification penalty.
