The decision has been made by the State High School League to proceed with a two tier hockey tournament in 1992. That seems to be a step in the right direction. At this point in time it appears the two tiers will be set up on the basis of the size of school. To wrap up the present package it has been decided, at least for the present, to play the secondary tourney at the St. Paul Civic center during the same week as the biggee. In addition the format calls for a Class AA gathering of the biggest schools and a Class A grouping of the smaller schools with smaller schools having the chance to play upward if they so desire.

Things are changing up in Hockeytown, U.S.A. And nobody in this proud hockey hamlet is happy about it.
“Our community is divided,” said Tom King, hockey coach at Warroad High School. “I don’t like this at all. It’s pretty obvious that this will split our town apart. Split it wide open.”
The issue in question is two-class hockey. The problem is what to do about it. Does Warroad play up as a Class AA program next year, or does it play Class A like the vast majority of schools its size will.
