For the first 10 years of its existence, the Upper Midwest High School Elite League would select 12 goaltenders and assign two of them to each of the league’s six Minnesota-based teams. This year the league is experimenting with a new system in which just nine goalies were selected, and instead of being assigned to a specific team, they are rotating through the league’s 21-game regular season schedule, continually playing with a different team.
After three weeks, the system appears to be working, according to Elite League goaltending coach Dave Rogalski.

The Upper Midwest High School Elite League has developed a reputation over the years for preparing players to move on to higher levels of hockey, and the proof is in the numbers: More than 50 Elite League players have been selected in the last three NHL Entry Drafts, and dozens of Elite League alumni have gone on to play college hockey at the Division I level.
And while not every player goes on to be an NHL draft pick, the Elite League also gives high school players an opportunity to advance to whatever the next stage of their hockey career might be. There were numerous examples of that development on display Sept. 14-17, as the North American Hockey League (NAHL) held its annual Showcase event at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

The fourth season of the Girls Upper Midwest High School Elite League will soon be underway! Modeled after the boys’ version, this fall developmental league allows the top female hockey players in the upper Midwest to compete with players of similar ability. The schedule allows multi-sport athletes to continue their fall sport.
“This league puts the top players against the top players. This is not only good for their development, but it also makes it easier for our staff to scout talent in the region,” said Jeff Giesen, Head Coach at St. Cloud State University.Black

Each year the Upper Midwest High School League produces its “profile book,” containing biographical information about the league’s players. This year, the league decided to use some space in the book to recognize the work of two people who have made extraordinary contributions to the league’s success.
Carol Carlson of Stillwater is retiring as chief registrar of USA Hockey’s Minnkota District. Dr. Alan Weingarden is marking his 11th year as a sponsor and support of the Elite League. Both will be honored in this year’s profile book.
