Hudson’s most reliable defenseman has earned the chance to try and duplicate his iron-man nature at the college level.

The Crusaders announced that Beloit, Wis., native Russell Oakes will play Division III college hockey for Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference member Bethel University this coming season.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defensemen played each of the past two winters in Hudson, appearing in over 100 games in that span.

Dean Talafous to serve as development consultant

Dean Talafous, founder of Total Hockey Training, will be a development consultant for the Hudson Crusaders in the upcoming season, providing one-on-one consulting for each player. Initially, he will meet with each player individually and go over his background, involvement and benefits of his development program.

He will listen to each player as they explain both their future hockey goals and their assessment of their physical and mental hockey abilities. Talafous will also listen to any questions players may have and any special requests.

After the initial meeting, Talafous starts the evaluation process, which consists of reviewing on-ice practices, off-ice training and going to league games. He takes notes from all three venues and develops a profile of each player. He is looking to establish a clear understanding of what kind of player each of them is and what their strengths and weaknesses are.

After Talafous makes his evaluation, he sits down with each player and reviews his findings. They work together to come up with an understanding and process for a clear and defined plan for maximum development. Periodically, Talafous will also be discussing players’ progress in their needed areas for improvement and implementing motivation throughout.

“I believe the process will greatly benefit the players that are sincere in their efforts,” Talafous said. “All players must work hard to improve all their skills but few players completely understand what it takes to be successful in getting their performance to the next level. This is where my background can be of great assistance to players.”

Multi-team tryout set for July 21-22

The Tri-City Ice Hawks, Fort Wayne Federals, Twin Cities Northern Lights, Chicago Jr. Bulldogs and Hudson Crusaders will be conducting multi-team tryouts in Troy, Mich., on July 21-22. A selection process will be used by each team to allocate players and as always players will be accommodated in choosing the best team for them as a fit for their abilities, resources and ambitions.

The tryouts will be at the Troy Sports Center on July 21 (9:45-11:15 a.m., 1:15-2:45 p.m.) and July 22 (10 a.m.-12 p.m.)

The cost to register is $99. Players can try out for multiple teams. All players must have previously registered with USA Hockey.

More Owls flying off to college

The Minnesota Owls’ Dallas Tucker has committed to Becker College in Leicester, Mass. Dallas Joined the Owls in the 2010-11 season after playing nearly the entire year in the NAHL and played again for the Owls in the 2011-12 campaign. Becker competes in the ECAC Northeast Conference. Dallas will be joining another Owl Zach Meilen who is transferring from Concordia-Wisconsin to Becker.

Additionally, Owls player Nick Ernst, has committed to Robert Morris for the 2012-13 season. Robert Morris plays ACHA Division 1 and in 2011-12 was consistently ranked in the top 10. Nick joined the Owls in 2010 and was a major contributor on the point. Nick started the 2011-12 season with Texas in the NAHL but finished the season with the Owls. Nick made the switch from defense to forward and truly blossomed into a top quality player. He finished the season with 37 points in 35 games.

The Minnesota Junior Hockey League (MnJHL) has been at the forefront of adopting rigorous standards. Last season, before being mandated by USA Hockey, each team employed an educational coordinator to monitor player’s school progress and provide advice when needed. The league for years has required screening of all adults who come in direct contact with players including staff, billets and coaches. The league is currently in partnership with USA Hockey officials, preparing to further progress to transition to college hockey playing rules. The league’s discipline committee has increased suspensions for players engaged in dangerous play as safety is a top priority.
