Jace Panzer leads East Grand Forks into the 2025-26 season with the defending champs ranked No. 4 in our pre-season rankings.

Defending champions East Grand Forks ranked No. 4

East Grand Forks sort of came out of the woods last season to claim the Class A state title. While they were a solid team who hung around in the weekly rankings, they weren’t necessarily considered a juggernaut of a squad or on people’s Bingo cards to be last team standing in St. Paul.

Yet there they were at year’s end, hoisting the state championship trophy after an incredible run through sections and the state tourney. They beat section favorite Warroad 3-2 in the Section 8A finals to advance to state where they were the No. 4 seed and beat Northern Lakes 3-0, top-seeded Hibbing/Chisholm 7-5 and then defending state champion St. Cloud Cathedral 2-1 in overtime.

The Green Wave graduated nine players from the championship squad and enter our rankings at No. 4 this season. That team they beat in the state semifinals? They are back on top to start the 2025-26 rankings.

Here is a breakdown of the top 10 teams in our pre-season coaches poll, as voted on by Class A coaches, followed by the Top 20.

1. Hibbing/Chisholm Bluejackets

Tate Swanson buries a goal against Luverne in the state quarterfinals last season. Swanson returns after a 64-point junior campaign.

The Bluejackets were the top seed in last year’s state tournament, but lost in heartbreaking fashion to eventual state champion East Grand Forks. However, they return their top four scorers, including the Swanson brothers, Tate and Cole. Tate is a senior and coming off a 22-42-64 campaign and Cole is one of the top sophomores in the state after a 20-34-54 freshman season. Isaiah Hildenbrandt notched 14-29-43 and Ethan Sundvall tallied 14-29-43 to give the Bluejackets four potent scorers returning to their squad. In fact, they graduate just five players from last year’s team and for the first time in forever are the favorites in Section 7A that has been dominated by Hermantown, who just happens to be ranked No. 2.

2. Hermantown Hawks

The Hawks open their season against Cretin-Derham Hall, Hill-Murray and Rock Ridge, three ranked AA teams. They will play more than half their games against AA teams, and good ones at that. This prepares them well for a deep playoff run as they are annually considered the top Class A program in the state. Last season they didn‘t have the offensive punch they normally have, scoring just 95 goals. But they graduate just five players and have a strong pipeline from their bantam and JV programs to help backfill their roster each season. Their ability to roll three lines is what sets them apart from a lot of Class A teams. Like any other year, the Hawks will be circling their prey at the end of the season as they hunt for another state title.

3. Warroad Warriors

A top 5 ranking for Warroad is pretty much as regular as the sunrise. The Warriors were bumped off in Section 8A last season by eventual champion East Grand Forks, coming just a goal away from advancing. They will look to get back down to St. Paul with a more seasoned squad led by Ryan Shaugabay, who is the team’s top returning scorer with 20 goals and 34 assists last season. He is one of nine seniors who had a lot of ice time last season. Broden Hontvet (8-28-36) and Gavin Andersen (14-13-27) should also increase their output from last season. Finn Nelson and Patrick Kennedy are two solid reliable goalies that will give the Warriors a strong chance to get through Section 8A and back to state. But they will have to go through East Grand Forks to do it.

4. East Grand Forks Green Wave

Tucker Lovejoy is the top returning scorer for defending champion East Grand Forks.

Is an encore in store for the Green Wave? With 10 seniors on their roster, they are poised to pick up right where they left off last season. They lose a bit of scoring, but return Tucker Lovejoy (19-11-30) and Jace Panzer (10-17-27) to help pace the offense. They are traditionally solid defensively and return goaltender Noah Schindele  (15-10-2/2.61/.890), so expect the Green Wave to continue their flow into the Section 8A final with a chance to defend their title.

5. Sartell-St. Stephen Sabres

The Sabers have been welcomed back to Class A hockey after spending a few years toiling with the big schools. Their No. 5 ranking heading into the season means coaches know the boys are back in town. They graduated seven seniors from a team that went 15-10-1 playing in AA, and will have a strong group of experienced players coming back who should see their production increase. The Sabers are also slated in Section 6A after playing in Section 8AA, giving them a strong chance to get to the state tournament and dethroning Northern Lakes, who were 6A champs last year.

6. Mahtomedi Zephyrs

Mahtomedi’s Devin O’Donnell is the team’s top returning scorer (12-18-30).

Like Hermantown, the Zephyrs play a strong AA schedule for a good chunk of the year so their win-loss record can often be thrown out with the dishwater come section playoffs as they are always heavy favorites coming out of Section 4A. Last year they won just 11 games, but still made the state tourney. This year’s team looks similar in that there isn’t much star power or heavy scoring, but a well-conditioned and well-coached team who can roll three lines and wear other Class A teams down.

7. Blake Bears

Another AA team who has moved to the Class A ranks and grabs a top-10 ranking are the Blake Bears. J.T. Wyman is in his first year as bench boss, taking over for former 1980 Olympic gold medalist Rob McClanahan who led the Bears to a 19-win season last year after a 2-24-0 season in 2023-24. The Bears return their top two scorers – Joe Erickson(23-29-52) and Landon Bell (19-20-39) — who will lead a group of nine seniors and a strong set of underclassmen in their first year back in Class A hockey.

8. Delano Tigers

Top returning scorer Daniel Halonen leads No. 8 Delano into the 2025-26 season.

The Tigers suffered a tough loss to Orono in last year’s Section 2A semifinals 4-3, and will look to get past that hump this season and into the section championship game where anything can happen. They are joined by Blake  and St. Louis Park in Section 2A along with Orono and Breck, all top 20 teams. The Tigers won 15 games last season, and return Daniel Halonen and Brody Geislinger to help lead a relatively young group of Tigers into the season and into the gauntlet that has become Section 2A.

9.  Monticello Moose

Nicklas Nelson is one of the top juniors in the state and looks to lead No. 9-ranked Monticello.

Section 5A looks to be a two-horse race between No. 9 Monticello and No. 10 St. Cloud Cathedral. The Moose secured an elbow up in the pre-season rankings, but plenty of hockey is to be played and Cathedral comes with a more storied history and state tournament experience. Monticello, however, has one of the top players in the section in Nicklas Nelson, a junior defenseman who had 11 goals and 31 assists as a sophomore. Ashton Stoll (17-29-46) also returns to help bolster a strong Moose squad who hopes to leave their tracks all the way to St. Paul come March.

10. St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders

Bo Schmidt had a stellar freshman season with 18 goals and will look to lead St. Cloud Cathedral back to state.

The Crusaders were a goal away from being crowned Class A state champions for the second straight season and look to get back to the state tourney. They have 14 seniors on their roster, led by skilled and crafty defenseman Griffin Sturm and speedy forward Bo Schmidt. Sturm had 19 goals and 30 assists as a D-man and Schmidt went 18-18-36 as a freshman. Sturm could be a Mr. Hockey candidate and certainly a candidate for the Reed Larson Award. The supporting cast of Crusaders will determine whether or not they can return to St. Paul in search of their third consecutive state title game.

Section-By-Section Breakdown

by Robert Brent, Let’s Play Hockey

Section 1A

Northfield looks to repeat as Section 1A champs.

For the last three seasons, the road to the State Tournament in Section 1A has run through Northfield. The Raiders had their best showing in the tournament last season, winning the consolation bracket. They have a strong chance of repeating their success, as they’re one of the strongest squads in the section. They’ll miss Ben Geiger, a high-scoring defender, but they still will return plenty of scoring.

The Waseca Bluejays will be hot on their heels, looking to make their first State Tournament appearance in program history. The team went 21-4-2 last season but had a disappointing showing in a section semi-finals loss against Rochester Lourdes. Waseca will look to get the job done this season with one of the most potent offenses in the class. Junior Griffin Storey led the team last year with 69 points as a sophomore.

Rochester Lourdes is another club poised to make some noise this year, following a section finals appearance last year. They’re one of the most consistent rosters in the section, featuring nine of their top ten scorers from last season. They also have one of the strongest goaltenders in the section with senior Anton Ackley. Ackley went 15-10-1, with a .911 save percentage last season.

Albert Lea and Dodge County will also feature some interesting players to watch this upcoming season. Senior defender Zaden Brua scored 36 points last season and will be one of the most steady presences any team can feature. Dodge County’s Camryn Koch was an impressive freshman the previous season, scoring 19 goals and 35 points. The Wildcats will hope for an even greater breakout season from the skilled forward.

Section 2A

Can Orono come out of Section 2A again? The section got a lot tougher with the additions of Blake and St. Louis Park.

The Orono Spartans have dominated the Section 2A scene for the past three seasons. Orono has advanced to three straight State Tournaments and placed third in last year’s event. If they hope to continue their run, they’ll be facing a stiff challenge this season.

Jackson Knight return to the Knights is a big difference maker. He was expected to play juniors but opted to bring his 33-29-62 back into the fray for the Spartans who will contend again as they have done a good job of reloading talent over the last few years and remain a strong contender.

Competition in Section 2 should be pretty stiff this year, with three teams (Blake, Delano and St. Louis Park) ranked in our top 20. Blake should be an experienced team, returning four of their top six scorers. Joe Erickson will be a senior this season and scored over 50 points last year.

Delano is led by the Halonen brothers, Daniel and Lance. They both scored over 20 points last season and will continue to be major contributors for the Tigers. The team will also be strong in net, returning all three goaltenders who played games for Delano.

St. Louis Park is losing a lot from their 16-win team last season, but has a few talented newcomers the team hopes will help propel it to its first tournament since 2003. Michael Hudick and Finn Rider should both step into the lineup and contribute on day one.

Blake Sauer (15-19-34) looks to help get Luverne back to state.

Luverne captured Section 3 last season by absolutely filling the net with pucks. They’ll have to do that again if they hope to defend their throne and make their second-straight appearance at the state tournament. Fortunately for the Cardinals, they definitely have the potential to repeat their performance. They’ll have five of their top six scorers from last season, including the trio of Maddux Domagala (75), Landyn Lais (67) and Ben Hartquist (55), who all scored over 50 points last season.

There will be stiff competition in the section, particularly from the Mankato West Scarlets. The Scarlets are a veteran team that roster 14 players who are either juniors or seniors. The Scarlets are a strong contrast to the Cardinals, as their most significant strength is keeping pucks out of the net. Defender Grady Schmidt is one of the top blueliners in the section, and the same can be said about their senior goalkeeper, Mason Schreiber.

Elsewhere in the section, New Ulm will look to make their return to the tournament after a year’s absence. If they hope to make noise in the section, they’ll have to have a great year from senior forward Brody Nordby. Nordby scored 36 points last season and should be one of the best forwards in the Big South Conference.

Section 4A

Mahtomedi has established themselves not just as a powerhouse in Section 4A, but in all of class A. They’ve made seven of the last eight state tournaments and won two of them in 2020 and 2023. The Zephyrs are well-positioned to be the class of Section 4 again with a talented and well-balanced team led by 30 point scorer forward Devin O’Donnell. Goaltender Jackson Chesak only started 12 games last season, but was excellent in those contests.

The Chisago Lakes Wildcats look to contend in the section with one of the most veteran groups in the state. The Wildcats boast a squad with 12 seniors returning from a team that went 16-10-2 last season. Chisago Lakes lost their starting goaltender from last season to a transfer, but will add sophomore Jacob Schaeppi whom they expect to have a breakout year.

Section 4 is also home to several St. Paul co-ops, the strongest of which might be Tartan/North. The Titans should be strong in net with junior goaltender Nathan McGuire. McGuire started 26 games last season and logged an impressive .910 save percentage.

The other teams of Section 4 appear to be in a building pattern after graduating significant portions of their roster. Osseo is particularly depleted after the departure of their top six scorers from last season.

Section 5A

Ashton Stoll and Monticello look to dethrone St. Cloud Cathedral in Section 5A.

St. Cloud Cathedral has spent the last decade establishing itself as one of the powerhouses of Class A. The Crusaders have gone to seven state tournaments since 2015 and emerged as champions in 2019 and 2024. They may have a chip on their shoulder after falling in overtime of last year’s Class A final. If they hope to repeat their recent success, they’ll have to do it without some key players from the previous several years. John Hirschfeld is gone after setting career-high marks for the program in assists (155) and points (237). Still, they return a lot of talent from last year and will see an influx of talented newcomers.

While the Crusaders are likely favorites in the section, they’ll face stiff competition from Monticello. The Moose went 23-4-1 last season and are looking to build off those strong results. Forward Ashton Stoll and defender Nicklas Nelson are two of the best players in the section and will be a massive asset for the Moose this season.

Sauk Rapids-Rice will also be a talented team, particularly with their scoring duo of Bryden Prelvitz and Elijah Fitch. The senior forwards combined for over 100 points last season and will hope to contribute even more if the Storm wants to make their first appearance at the State Tournament since 2000.

River Lakes is also primed to take a step forward after a 15-8-2 season. The Stars return a majority of their varsity team from last season and are expected to improve in the 2025-26 campaign.

Section 6A

Northern Lakes is the defending section champion but will have to deal with new section foe Sartell-St. Stephen.

Northern Lakes captured the Section 6 title last season off the back of strong scoring and solid goaltending. If they hope to replicate their success from last season, they’ll have to find a way to replace their offensive production from last season. The Lightning graduated their top three scorers from last season, but senior forward Jacob Peterson is poised for a big year. The team also returns their goalie from last year, Sam Suja, who started 29 games and logged a .914 save percentage.

The Sartell Sabres will be one of the strongest contenders in the section and may be a contender for the state title. The team is ranked #5 in the class in the LPH Pre-season Rankings and returns most of its team from a 15-10-1 campaign in the 2024-25 season. Forward Devin Jacobs and blueliner Collin Otto should both be key parts of the push for the program’s first State Tournament appearance.

The Little Falls Flyers are another program to watch in the 2025-26 season. Defender Remi Chisholm is a smooth-skating blueliner who is the team’s top returning scorer (23 points last season) and will drive the Flyers’ offense this season. Little Falls is particularly effective in net with senior goaltender Izaak Kalis. Kalis logged a .926 save percentage and could see himself in the Brimsek Award conversation if he repeats his performance from last year.

Elsewhere in the section, Breckenridge/Wahpeton will be the most veteran team in the section with the return of every varsity player from last year, except their backup goalie. With a year of development, the Blades should be better than their 10-16-1 finish last year.

Section 7A

Cole Swanson and Hibbing/Chisholm will look to get back to state in the tough Section 7A.

Section 7A should be one of the most competitive in the state with a trio of high-level contenders and a deep pool of talent. Last year’s winner, Hibbing/Chisholm, will be a substantial threat again this year with an excellent returning class and enter the season atop the LPH Rankings. Their top five scorers from last season all scored more than 30 points and will lead the Bluejackets again this season. The Swanson brothers, Tate (64 points last season) and Cole (54), will produce more fireworks this year for a Hibbing/Chisholm team that has championship hopes.

The competition will be stiff, especially from the perennial contender Hermantown Hawks. The Hawks have won three state championships since 2015 and are fielding another solid squad for this season. Hermantown will be tough to score against with their fantastic goalkeeper, Bryce Francisco. Francisco led the state last season in save percentage (.940) and has to be considered a favorite to be nominated for the Brimsek Award.

Cloquet-Esko-Carlton will counter with a strong goalkeeper of their own. Jacob Iallonardo started 18 games for the Lumberjacks last season, registering a .921 save percentage. The Lumberjacks will see a lot of turnover at the top of their roster, but should still be a tough out for anyone in the state.

If you’re looking for another team to watch, International Falls should be an exciting squad this year. Anthony and William Yerxa combined for 135 points last season and will likely be even more explosive in their senior season. After a 17-9-0 season, the Broncos should aspire to climb even higher in the rankings.

Section 8A

Section 8 is home to some of the bluebloods of Class A hockey. East Grand Forks captured the Class A state championship and will be a strong contender to repeat this season. The Green Wave will return 10 skaters from last season, along with two goaltenders. Tucker Lovejoy and Jace Panzer should each be in line for better seasons this year after putting in great efforts in 2024-25.

While the Green Wave will be hoping to retain its title, it’ll have to stave off a stiff test in the form of the Warroad Warriors. Warroad has a rich hockey history, having made four tournament appearances since 2020, but is still seeking its first championship since 2005. The Warriors will undoubtedly have aspirations and opportunities to capture that title with an extensive returning roster of exceptional players. They’ll be without last year’s top scorer, Taven James, but will return their next five leading scorers. Ryan Shaugabay is a senior this year and will look to build upon a breakout season in which he scored 58 points. The Warriors will also be strong in net with both Finn Hanson and Patrick Kennedy coming back for a potential state title run.

There’s plenty of talent elsewhere in the section apart from the Green Wave and Warriors as well. Senior forwards Garrett Fischer and Jay Reese should play massive roles in a Crookston offense that looks like it could score a lot of goals. Fischer scored 56 points last season while Reese added 48. In a similar situation, Red Lake Falls should be able to score plenty of goals, too. They’re led by Keegan Schmitz (49 points last season) and Boe Nelson (44).

Section 8 has a ton of goal-scoring ability, but there’s also a lot of defense in the section as well. Griffin Lindberg is a junior from Detroit Lakes who should be one of the strongest in the class. Lindberg started 25 games last season for the Lakers and logged a .908 save percentage. Reid Gerbracht is a strong defender for Bagley/Fosston, who should be interesting to follow this season as he plays his junior season for a Flyers team that went 15-11-0 last year and has aspirations for even more.
