Warroad beats Hawks to take over top spot

Anytime Warroad and Hermantown meet, the stands are packed to the gills and it was no different Saturday as the Warriors visited Hermantown in a battle of No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Class A boys hockey.

It’s been some time since Hermantown has lost a Class A contest at home, but the Warriors took control early and never let their foot off the gas in a 4-1 win.

Draydin Johnson and Ryan Shaugabay scored a minute apart midway through the first period for a 2-0 lead as Warroad outshot the Hawks 15-5 in the first period.

Henry Peterson gave the Hawks some momentum with a late first-period goal, but that was all they would muster the rest of the night.

Murray Marvin-Cordes added two second-period goals and both teams skated to a scoreless third period as the Warriors held on for their 14th win of the season, improving to 14-3-0. Hermantown fell to 10-3-2.

Hermantown was coming off a 3-1 win over No. 3 St. Cloud Cathedral, who maintains the No. 3 spot in this week’s rankings. East Grand Forks and Mahtomedi round out the top 5.

Not much changed in the top 10 or top 20 with some teams slipping up and down a couple spots. La Crescent-Hokah comes in at No. 19 this week with a 13-1-0 record.
