Big week on tap in Class AA Boys

The Class AA Boys rankings this week will have a short shelf life as many teams will play three games against top-tier competition. With several ranked teams playing in holiday tournaments beginning Wednesday, Dec. 27, it will be interesting to see which teams fare well not just on Wednesday, but have the stamina and resiliency to play just as well on Friday.

Not only will we find out which teams are in the best physical shape, we will see what teams have the mental toughness and intestinal fortitude to play 153 minutes of high-paced, intense hockey.

Will the Christmas hangover affect some teams? Sure. But this week is the only other week during the season where teams play three games in three days. It’s as close as we come to mimicking the state tournament, which requires the same schedule, albeit with a much-higher blood pressure rating.

It will be a good test on a lot of fronts and shine a light not just on team strengths, but also expose some weaknesses. Ultimately, it will paint a better picture of what teams we can expect to see hauling their hockey bags downtown in early March.

Here are some key match ups this week:

No. 1 Minnetonka will play (in order Wed-Fri) No. 6 Rogers, No. 18 Lakeville South and No. 2 Wayzata.

No. 2 Wayzata will play No. 18 Lakeville South, No. 6 Rogers and No. 1 Minnetonka.

No. 3 Chanhassen will play No. 9 Maple Grove, Academy of Holy Angels and No. 10 Hill-Murray.

No. 4 Edina will play No. 20 Moorhead, No. 13 St. Thomas Academy and No. 16 Cretin-Derham Hall.

No. 5 Benilde-St. Margaret’s will play No. 12 Holy Family, No. 19 Champlin Park and Academy of Holy Angels.

No. 6 Rogers will play No. 1 Minnetonka, No. 2 Wayzata and No. 18 Lakeville South.

No. 7 Rosemount will play No. 14 Andover, No. 9 Maple Grove and No. 19 Champlin Park.

No. 8 Shakopee will play No. 1A Hermantown on Friday in Hermantown.

No. 9 Maple Grove will play No. 3 Chanhassen, No. 7 Rosemount and No. 12 Holy Family

No. 10 Hill-Murray will No. 19 Champlin Park, No. 14 Andover and No. 3 Chanhassen.
