Andover’s Nora Sauer fires a shot towards Rosemount’s goal as Rosemount’s Sophie Stramel attempts to block in Andover’s 6-0 win Thursday in the Class AA quarterfinals.

Huskies move on to semifinals against Hill-Murray

Rosemount entered Thursday’s state tournament after winning their section as the No. 4 seed. So when they were matched up against a perennial powerhouse like Andover, they knew it would be an uphill battle, and it was.

But the Irish stuck with the Huskies for the better parts of two periods, trailing just 3-0 after two. The problem was they just couldn’t mount much of an offensive attack to produce any scoring threats. Instead they battled most of the game in the the neutral zone and in their zone. Such is life when you play a program that has produced two of the last three Ms. Hockey Winners, won their last seven section titles and have two state championships under their belt in the past four years.

For Andover, they looked solid with quick feet and strong, one-touch puck movement in the offensive zone. Avery Kasick got them on board almost midway through the first on a power play. It was Kasick’s 10th tally of the season and was assisted by Samantha Angelotti and Hannah Christenson. Ella Thoreson then made it 2-0 just over four minutes later with her 12th goal of the season assisted by Nora Sauer.

Senior defenseman Cailin Mumm scored the lone goal of the second period, her sixth of the season, assisted by Mackenzie Jones. In the third, Mumm scored again in between two goals by Maya Engler. Engler’s two goals gives her 13 on the season.

The win improved the Huskies to 22-4-3 on the season. They will battle a Hill-Murray squad who looked equally as good on Thursday.

Rosemount fell to 14-10-5 and will face Roseau in the consolation bracket.
