Hannah Halverson had two goals and two assists to lead the hornets past Northfield in the Class AA quarterfinals Thursday.

Hornets buzz past Northfield to advance to semifinal against Tonka

The Edina Hornets find themselves in a strikingly familiar position.

Once again they will play Friday night for an opportunity to advance to the Class A State Championship game.

The fourth-seeded Hornets defeated No. 5-seed Northfield Thursday night in the quarterfinals to advance to play top-ranked Minnetonka in Friday’s nightcap.

The Hornets controlled the game from the start and after two periods had outshot the Raiders 25-7. They got on board when Lorelai Nelson won a draw in the left face off circle and drew the puck to Hannah Halverson who fired a wrist shot at Northfield goalie Macy Mueller. Mueller made the save, but Whitney Horton was sitting on the doorstep and slammed home the rebound for her 20th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Northfield had a golden opportunity down 1-0 with a two-man advantage, but they couldn’t capitalize.

Halverson made them pay when she shelved a wrister for her 27th goal of the season for a 2-0 lead after two.

The Hornets came out buzzing in the third and Horton had an almost identical goal on the other end of the ice when she tapped in another rebound sitting on the doorstep. Halverson added another tally and finished with two goals and two assists as Edina cruised to a 5-0 victory. The Hornets also shut down the state’s top scorer in Ayla Puppe. Puppe had some nice rushes and a few chances, but the Hornets defense played strong holding the Raiders to just eight shots (39-8).

The Hornets improved to 22-6-1 and will face top-ranked Minnetonka Friday night in the semifinals. The two teams met in the third-place game last season with Edina winning 3-2.

This season the two teams split with Edina winning 1-0 at Braemar and Minnnetonka winning 3-2 in overtime at Pagel. Shots in the two games were 47-46 Edina.

That’s how close these two rivals are, which means Friday night’s semifinal should be a doozy.

Edina’s Lorelai Nelson had a pair of assists in Thursday’s win over Northfield.
