No. 6AA Pioneers take down No. 6A Mahtomedi 9-1

Despite being in different classes, games between neighboring Class A powerhouse Mahtomedi and Class AA powerhouse Hill-Murray are usually good games with a couple goals of separation. But not on Tuesday. The No. 6AA Pioneers opened their season with a 9-1 win over the No. 6A Zephyrs, scoring six goals in the third period and outshooting them 57-14.

Tommy Miller, Boden Sampair and Jackson Reeves each scored twice to lead the Pioneers. Caden Zasada had three assists and John Kelly, Riley Zupfer and Casper Lang each had a pair of helpers to lead the way.

The Pioneers improved to 1-0-0 on the season while the Zephyrs fell to 0-2-0.

Hill-Murray will face another Class A power when they take on No. 2A Hermantown Saturday. Mahtomedi will search for their first win when they travel to Centennial Friday.

#1AA Rogers 5, #14AA White Bear Lake 2

Top-ranked Rogers continued their winning ways with another decisive win against a strong opponent, this time taking down No. 14AA White Bear Lake.

The Bears opened the scoring when freshman Nash Roed scored late in the first period. Rogers outshot the Bears 14-6, but Leo Gabriel, one of the top goalies in the state, held the Royals scoreless.

It took until almost seven minutes into the second period for Rogers to light the lamp. Keaton Weis scored his second of the season, assisted by Mason Jenson and Brady Sorrentino. Just 16 seconds later Jenson scored to give the Royals a 2-1 lead. But just a half minute later Rian Marquardt tied it for the Bears as the teams headed to the locker room deadlocked at 2-2.

But the Royals depth won out as they scored twice midway through the third frame and added an empty netter late to execute the win. They ended up outshooting the Bears 30-17.

Brock Cheslock, Jayden Kurtz and Parker Deschene scored the goals in the third for Rogers who improved to 3-0-0. All three wins have come against Top 20 opponents (#18 Andover, #2 Shakopee, and now #14 White Bear Lake).

Their schedule won’t get any easier as they will take on No. 7AA St. Thomas Academy (1-0-0) Friday in Rogers. White Bear Lake is off until Dec. 5 when they will host Forest Lake.
