Carstensen scores twice as the Wildcats keep dancing in the State Tournament

No. 3 Seed Dodge County 2, Fergus Falls 0

Dodge County makes a trip to St. Paul after four straight section final losses. The Wildcats faced Fergus Falls, who made their third State Tournament appearance in five years. 

The Otters showed their defensive strength in the first period, bringing a physical presence against the speed of Dodge County. Jori Jones Semi-finalist Ana Jyrkas held off on some great scoring chances by the Wildcats on the power play. With just over two minutes left in the opening frame, Jyrkas stopped a point-blank shot from Abby Simons to complete her 11 saves in the first period. 

Dodge County finally broke through in the second period, as McKenna LaFleur found a loose puck in front for a back-door goal. LaFleur scored the 14th goal of her Senior season. Just a few seconds later Dodge County controlled a Fergus Falls turnover and turned it into a 2-1. Maysie Koch opted to shoot, and it was the right decision as she snipped it in the top right corner. Koch scored her 23rd goal, as she continues a great Freshman year. The Wildcats held a 2-0 lead after the second period. Dodge County also led in shots 17-7. 

The Wildcats found a bit of puck luck in the third period when Nora Carstensen’s shot got deflected by an Otter defender and tricked up Jyrkas. Dodge County, took a 3-0 lead early in the final frame. 

Fergus Falls got called for a penalty late in the third period, and Dodge County took advantage. Jyrkas made a couple of huge saves on the kill for Fergus Falls, but Carstensen netted her second goal of the game on a perfect shot from the circle to give Dodge County a 4-0 lead at the 9:36 mark. Carstensen now has 33 goals on the season.

Dodge County’s speed came up big at The X, as they skated by Fergus Falls 4-1 in a physical and fun Quarterfinal game. The Wildcats led in shots 29-9 over Fergus Falls. 

The Wildcats improved to 22-4-0 on the season while Fergus Falls fell to 15-12-1. 


Carstensen added an assist with her two goals, Koch had a goal and assist, Zoe Heimers had two assists and Mollie Koch had one assist for Dodge County. Ida Huber stopped all nine shots she faced in net for the Wildcats.

The left side of the Class A State Tournament bracket has a Semifinal matchup set. No. 2 Seed Orono will face No. 3 Seed Dodge County on Friday at 11:00 a.m. These two teams squared off once during the regular season when Orono took down Dodge County 5-4 in overtime.
