Plenty of contenders in Class AA
by Rob Brent, Let’s Play Hockey
The puck dropped on the Class AA hockey season last week just months removed from Hill-Murray overcoming perennial power Edina for the state title. The Pioneers come into this season ranked on top in our first rankings of the season with Centennial/Spring Lake Park earning the second spot. Edina, Holy Family and Minnetonka round out the top five and all come from different sections, meaning those five teams very well could be battling for a state championship come February.
Here are the Top 20 rankings to start the season as well as a section-by-section breakdown:

Section 1AA
Section 1 has been one of the most competitive in recent years, with five different teams winning the section in the last eight years. The previous two winners, Farmington and Northfield, are the favorites going into this season.
Farmington is led by twin sisters Jenna and Amelia Goblirsch, two of the top sophomores in the class. The pair combined for 72 points last season and will be crucial pieces for the Tigers again. Northfield leans more on its experience, particularly with defender Mia Miller. The senior blueliner could be in Ms. Hockey conversations this season after scoring 61 points last year.
Lakeville South, Owatonna and Rochester/John Marshall should also all be in the conversation. Owatonna’s Grace Mitchell in particular is a player to watch as the junior forward could play a key role for a Huskies team that won 14 games last season.

Section 2AA

Section 2 underwent a seismic shift last season when Holy Family knocked off Minnetonka in overtime. Minnetonka had won the section every year since 2019 and looked like a heavy favorite to do so again before the Fire broke through. Those two teams seem poised to battle it out again for the top of the section.
Both have suffered some losses, with Minnetonka losing its top four scorers from last season. Holy Family graduated Josie Lynn, the program’s all-time leading scorer, but also added transfer Maddy Kimbrel and will return most of their other pieces. The Fire and Skippers are both top-level teams, but Holy Family probably has the edge.
Away from the top of the section, several teams are reloading after being veteran teams last season. Eden Prairie and Shakopee both lost their top five scorers, while New Prague and Chaska also feature young rosters.
Prior Lake has the potential to make some noise with strong goaltending from Sophie Cappiello and six of its top seven scorers from last season coming back.

Section 3AA

Section 3 is strong with fairly evenly distributed talent. Rosemount has captured the last three seasons and is a talented team once again. Still, the roster will face some questions due to the significant departures it faced over the offseason. Star forward Sophie Stramel won’t be back, and neither will Rosemount’s top five scorers from last season.
Another team that will experience significant roster turnover is Cretin-Derham Hall. The team, as always, will be very talented, but this season it will also be exceptionally young. They graduated seven of their top eight scorers from last season. It will be fascinating to see whether that’s a hindrance for the team or whether their young roster can take a step as a group.
Lakeville North should be a contender in the section, given that they’re one of the most experienced teams in the state. They’ll boast 14 players entering either their junior or senior year.
Some other interesting players to watch this season include Addie Corkish from Park of Cottage Grove, Brielle Clardy from Eastview, and Lauryn Murray from Eagan. Corkish, a junior, led the Wolfpack in scoring last season. Clardy had a breakout season as a 9th grader and is one of the most promising underclass players in the state. Lauryn Murray is a junior defender who will lead Eagan into the season.

Section 4AA

Defending champion Hill-Murray leads Section 4A after winning not only their section but the state a year ago. But they won’t have an easy path back to state if Woodbury has anything to say about it.
While the Pioneers and Royals are both strong contenders, they’re built very differently as teams. Hill-Murray is a high-flying offensive team that will return its top four scorers from last season, all of whom scored more than 30 points. The Pioneer attack is led by Wisconsin commit Emily Pohl (74 points last season) and Jaycee Chatleain (59 points). Woodbury, on the other hand, is built to stop goals. Senior defender Brooke Gnetz is one of the best in class, as is their junior goalkeeper Alyssa Polaski, who went 22-3-2 last season with a .928 save percentage.
The talent in Section 4 doesn’t end there. Senior forward Madelyn Lee should also have a fantastic season for White Bear Lake. St. Paul/Two Rivers returns a veteran group led by a trio of seniors that includes defender Bryn Christopherson, and forwards Faye Leitner and Lucy Swift.

Section 5AA

Much like Section 4, Section 5 is among the strongest in the class. Centennial/SLP and Maple Grove have dominated the section, being the only two teams to advance to the State Tournament since 2018. The Cougars and the Crimson are favorites to continue that battle as the section’s top contenders.
Centennial is powered by their trio of scoring forwards, Grace Laager, Alaina Gnetz and Mia Sutch. All three scored over 50 points last season and should be among the top forwards in the state on the stat sheet once again. Maple Grove is backstopped by Bella Prosser, an impressive goalkeeper who logged a .935 save percentage last season.
Goalkeeping is an area that may be a struggle for the middle of this section, given that North Wright County, Osseo/Park Center, River Cities, Rogers and Roseville/Mahtomedi are without their primary goaltenders last year. Their new netminders could always step in and play great, but it is a crucial thing to watch early in the season.
River Cities (formerly Champlin Park/Coon Rapids) could be a bit of a dark horse and they certainly won’t have problems scoring. June Semling and Sydney Burnevik will both return and combined for over 100 points last season.

Section 6AA

In recent history, Section 6 has been dominated by the Edina Hornets. The perennial contenders have won several consecutive years and have also captured five state titles since 2017. They’ll definitely be in contention again this year after returning most of the crucial pieces that placed them as the state runner-up last year.
While the Hornets look strong again, they’ll undoubtedly face opposition in the section. The strongest challenger looks to be the Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights. The play of Talla Hansen, a junior forward, will go a long way in deciding how the team’s offense plays. Benilde-St. Margaret’s also has an interesting situation in net with Emma Matack. Matack was only the goalie of record nine times last season, but she was undefeated with a 0.89 goals against average and .960 save percentage. If she can maintain that level of performance over a full season, the team will be hard to beat.
Wayzata is a team that could build on their last season. They went 12-15-0 in the previous campaign, but return their top three scorers. They also have a talented goaltender, Kylie Jaksha, who will be making her debut in Minnesota High School Hockey after playing last season in Butte, Montana.

Section 7AA

Section 7 is another group that has generally been dominated by one team, with the Andover Huskies winning every year since 2018. The Huskies have maintained an iron grip on the section, but that grip may be starting to loosen. They graduated their top five scorers from last season, so they’ll need people to step up in a big way.
The most intriguing aspect of the section is that several teams have a genuine chance to challenge for the top spot. Blaine is strong in net, with senior goaltender Kayden Larson leading the charge. Forest Lake is also a strong squad led by Abigail Sklavenitis, a skilled power forward who aims to build on her 30-point season from last year.
Grand Rapids/Greenway won 21 games last year and will look to see how well Kate Carlson progresses. Carlson scored 49 points last season as an 8th-grader. If that’s a sign of things to come, she’ll be one of the most dangerous scorers in the state.
All in all, most of the teams in this section have a real chance to win, or at least have an interesting storyline coming into the season. Andover is still the favorite, but it will have to put together a great season to ward off some contenders.

Section 8AA

Section 8AA should be another competitive group with a lot of talent throughout. It’s the only section with three teams (Moorhead, Roseau and Bemidji) ranked in the Top 20..
Moorhead won the section last season and returns with a lot of talent this year. They lost their top scorer, but Haylee Melquist (35 points), Shay Benson (33), Anna Bjorkman (31), and the speedy defender Lucey Wilson (25) make for a strong returning class. Roseau will also have a talented roster led by its senior forward Jasmine Hovda. Hovda is a Ms. Hockey contender and scored 46 points last season.
Meanwhile, the Bemidji Lumberjacks will look to make their first State Tournament appearance since 2007. The team went 16-10-1 last season and should improve this season after bringing back nearly the entire team. Juniors Bailey Rupp and Millie Knott will make for one of the most lethal duos in the state.
The rest of the section is also talented, notably Alexandria, which is returning many veterans. Still, there are also a lot of young groups who will look to build this season for potential future runs in the section.
