Dodge County crashed the glass last season after beating Warroad to claim their first state championship in program history. They return this year as favorites in Section 1A and as a favorite to once again compete for a state title. PHOTO BY JEFF ANDERSON/AJ PHOTOGRAPHY

The puck dropped last week on another season of girls high school hockey. We are just months removed from Dodge County crashing the glass after dethroning Warroad with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory. Warroad had advanced after a three overtime win over Orono in the semifinals who then defeated Academy of Holy Angels in the third place game. Those four teams have been mainstays at the top of the Let’s Play Hockey Rankings the past several seasons. They are right there again this season with some other teams in the mix as favorites in their respective sections.

Two teams who could paint a new landscape in girls hockey are Mankato East who drop down form Class AA to Class A in Section 2A and St. Cloud who will look to dethrone Fergus Falls in Section 6A.

Breck and Blake look to be powers in their sections, and Marshall is the frontrunner in Section 3A. Proctor/Hermantown has been dominant in Section 7A.

Six of the eight teams who made the state tournament last season are in the top 10 in our initial rankings this season.

The Let’s Play Hockey Rankings are conducted through polling coaches and is presented by Tradition Companies.

We also break down each section.

Section 1A

Dodge County and Holy Angels battled it out in the state semifinals a year ago. Dodge County is a favorite to return to the state tourney where they will look to defend their title.

Dodge County leads section 1A as they defend their 2024-25 Class A State Championship. The Wildcats will look much different this year after the departures of leading scorer Nora Carstensen and Jori Jones Goaltender of the year semifinalist Ida Huber. Despite those departures, Dodge County is still well set up to contend in Section 1 with five of its top six scorers returning from last season, including junior forward Maysie Koch.

The pack of Section 1 challengers to Dodge County’s throne includes standout Albert Lea, Austin, Red Wing, Simley, and South Central. The Albert Lea Tigers are perhaps the strongest challengers, led by sisters Hanna and Haley Austinson. The pair combined for 81 points last season. Morgan Goskenson also returns after averaging close to a goal a game with 23 tallies.

The rest of the section features a group of young teams aiming to make significant improvements from last season. Red Wing is returning all but two of their players, with Austin (three departures) and South Central (four departures) also remaining largely consistent. Simley is the most depleted squad in the section, having lost four of its top six scorers from last season, but brings back one of the top defenders in the section in Emersyn Webinger.

Section 2A

Section 2A should be one of the most competitive in the state, as there isn’t a true powerhouse in the group, but every team is capable of winning games,. None of the Section 2A clubs won more than 20 games last year, but all of them won 10 or more.

If any team looks poised to separate itself from the pack, it’s the Mankato East Cougars, who have moved down from Class AA to Class A. The Cougars are returning their top seven scorers from last season, including the high-octane trio of Brielle Newton (49 points), Laina Peterson (50 points) and Alexis Erickson (59 points).

Minnesota River is another team that should challenge for the title with the rare distinction of being a team that will return its entire squad from last season. All 20 letterwinners will return, led by standout goaltender Annika Magelee, who went 18-6-2 with a .936 save percentage last season. Hutchinson will be a nice mix of veteran and young talent that has the chance to make some noise in the section, too.

Meanwhile, last season’s section champs, River Lakes, lost their top scorer and both of their goaltenders, but are still looking to contend. Mankato West’s excellent junior duo of Penny Gorman and Maleah Giesen should power the Scarlets to a strong season. Willmar will look to rebuild after the graduation of its top three scorers and last year’s starting goaltender.

Section 3A

Section 3A went through an upheaval last season when Marshall came out on top over Luverne. The Luverne Cardinals had earned their way into the state tournament five years in a row before Marshall’s victory. All indications point towards the Cardinals and the Marshall Tigers being the strongest contenders this year as well.

Marshall is ranked seventh in the state heading into the season off the back of their potent offense. Junior Brooklyn Mauch led all of Class A in scoring last season with 86 points. Luverne will look to reclaim its throne with an experienced team that includes Elle Van Batavia, one of the strongest underclassmen in the state.

Outside of those two clubs, Section 3 is filled with experienced teams that will have had a year to build and contend. Every team in the section is returning its top scorer, except Windom Area, which is seeing a massive roster turnover. Eighth grader Brekkyn Rossow is the only player returning to the Eagles who placed in their top six scorers last season.

Section 4A

Senior Avery Kryzer will help lead Academy of Holy Angels with hopes of coming out of Section 4A and returning to the state tournament. LPH PHOTO BY JEFF ANDERSON

Section 4A may be one of the most competitive sections in the state and is led by some of the blue bloods of girls’ high school hockey, with a combined 12 State Championships in the section.

The Blake Bears are responsible for seven of those championships, but haven’t returned to the state tournament since 2017. They’re looking to break that streak this season with a strong squad that should excel at limiting goals. The Bears are returning five of their defenders from last season, along with Senior goaltender Janie McGawn, who registered a .950 save percentage last season.

Holy Angels has won the section two seasons in a row, but will be taking the ice without last year’s starting goalie or three of their top four scorers. Chisago Lakes and South St. Paul are in a similar position with some significant roster turnover, but are still looking primed to contend for the section.

Visitation United and Minneapolis have a bit more consistency in their rosters and will look to build on that and improve their records from last season.

Section 5A

Much like Section 4, Section 5 is loaded at the top with state championship contenders. Breck and Orono are both frontrunners and amongst the top five in Let’s Play Hockey’s rankings and have won seven of the last eight Section 5 titles.

The Orono Spartans will feature a youth movement on the team, as they will have no seniors on the roster and will return several key juniors from last season’s state championship appearance. Breck finds themselves in a similar situation. While most of their team is returning from last season, they’re still a very young team. Their top five scorers from last season are all sophomores this year and will look to make a jump from being a strong team to a true contender.

Mound Westonka/SW Christian will also have a strong season, with the team led by senior defender Lizzy Callahan, a Minnesota Duluth commit.

Meanwhile, Princeton/Big Lake/Becker, Waconia, Pine City Area and Delano Rockford will all look to improve on last season and hope to contend in the section.

Section 6A

For the last three seasons, the path to the State Tournament has run through Fergus Falls. The Otters are seeking their fourth consecutive Section 6 championship and are returning nearly their entire team from last season. Hannah Johnson, a senior forward who scored 38 points last season, and Maggie Greenagel, a junior defender who put up 35 points last season, will be particularly crucial to their title defense.

While the Otters are likely favorites to repeat, they’ll have a few other clubs hot on their tails. St. Cloud drops from Class AA to A and will boast a trio of high-powered forwards with Reese Ruska, Liz Bell and Reeghan Stevens all scoring more than 20 points last year. Meanwhile, Sartell/Sauk Rapids is led by one of the strongest goaltenders in the section, Abby Massmann. Massmann logged a .927 save percentage for the Stormin Sabres last year.

Northern Lakes is also a team to watch, with defender Natalie Stueven set to be one of the better senior defenders in the class. Morris/Benson Area and Prairie Center will also look to gain some footing in the section.

Section 7A

Proctor/Hermantown has dominated Section 7 in recent years, and there doesn’t appear to be an end in sight. The Mirage have won the section every year since 2018, except for one, and look to be a strong club again entering this season. The team should be powerful defensively, as they didn’t lose anyone from their blue line last year.

North Shore, on the other hand, wins its games by filling the opposing net with pucks. They’ll return five players who scored over 20 points last year, including Sarah Stauber, who scored 13 goals and added 35 assists last season. The senior defender should be one of the best in the state this season.

Another player to watch will be Rock Ridge’s Mayme Scott. The junior forward scored 60 points last year and will be a massive part of the Wolverines’ attack if they’re successful this campaign.

The other three teams in the section, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, Hibbing-Chisholm, and Moose Lake Area, will all have to replace some significant pieces from their teams last season. This is especially true for Moose Lake, which graduated its top four scorers and starting goalkeeper from last year.

Section 8A

Payton Rolli returns to the Warroad crease where she will lead the Warriors into the 2026 season after an impressive 2025 campaign. LPH PHOTO BY JEFF ANDERSON

The Warroad Warriors dominate Section 8 like no other team, regardless of section or class. The Warriors have won several seasons in a row and look primed to do so again with a balanced roster that’s strong in all areas of the ice. Warroad will be particularly tough to score on, given that it’s the senior season for Minnesota commit Payton Rolli. Rolli was 26-4-0 last season with a .943 save percentage.

The Crookston Pirates also appear to be a strong team, led by one of the strongest sophomores in the class, Jocelyn Field. Field scored 44 points as a freshman and can only get better as a promising young talent for Crookston.

Another player to watch for is Blake Schultz from East Grand Forks. Schultz scored 39 goals last year for the Green Wave. The outstanding senior will have to be excellent again if East Grand Forks is to contend.

Thief River Falls and Detroit Lakes should also be improved clubs this year, following the return of most of their rosters for the season.
