Austin Packers

Season Outlook: The Packers have only three seniors heading into the 2023-24 season, and although they lost their top scorer to graduation, Peyton Squier is back, as she was second on the team in goals and points. 

Farmington Tigers

Season Outlook: The Tigers are a young, yet experienced team heading into 2023-24. They have players like Paige Johnson who’s just a freshman this year, but in her eighth grade season, she was third on the team in points. Farmington will have more experience and maturity this season, so improvement is expected. 

Lakeville South Cougars

Season Outlook: The Cougars bring back their 2022-23 scoring leader Josie Grossman who enters her Junior season. They also have their starting goalie Claire Bronson who had a tremendous 2022-23 campaign posting a GAA well under two and a save percentage over .930. The Cougars are still a little young but they have plenty of experience to compete in Section 1AA. 

Mankato East Cougars 

Coach: Amber Prange

State Tournaments: 99, 17, 19, 22, 23.

Season Outlook: The Cougars finished as consolation champions in the 2022-23 state tournament. They do lose a good amount of players on their roster but retain three of the five top scorers from last year Jessica Eykyn, Brielle Newton, and Ashley Fischer. Mankato East will have to fill the shoes of their starting goalie Annaliese Rader who graduated, Jordan Thomas was able to get some game action last year, so it’s safe to assume her workload will increase. 

Northfield Raiders 

Coach: Paige Haley

State Tournaments: 16, 17, 22.

Top Returners: Ayla Puppe Sr./F (53-35-88), Emerson Garlie Sr./F (29-22-51), Grace McCoshen Sr./D (8-35-43), Mia Miller So./D (8-23-31), Isabelle Stephes Sr./F (6-16-22), Macy Mueller Jr./G (20-8-0/1.86/.918).

Season Outlook: The Raiders have their five top scorers back, including their leading goal and assist leader from 2022-23 with Ayla Puppe who put up over 50 goals. Puppe will be a huge part of this Raiders offense in 2023-24, along with their netminder MAcy Mueller who is coming back after a great season. 

Owatonna Huskies

Season Outlook: The Huskies head into the 2023-24 hockey season as a very veteran and experienced squad, even though they lost a good amount of seniors from a year ago, they still have two of their former top five scorers, Samantha Bogen, and Izzy Radel. They also retain both of the goalies they started last season, Mikayla Wilker, and Leah Spencer. 

Rochester Century/John Marshall 

Coach: Tom Aney 

State Tournaments: N/A

2022-23: 7-17-1

Top Returners: Megan Gamble Jr./F (10-8-18), Daelyn Williams Jr./F (13-3-16), Paige Groslie Jr./D (5-7-12), Annika Torbenson Sr./F (3-9-12), Fiona Barry Sr./F (6-5-11). 

Season Outlook: Rochester Century/John Marshall has some more experience on their roster this season. They lose their top scorer but retain Megan Gamble who was just a couple points shy of that top spot in 2022-23. 

Rochester Mayo Spartans

Season Outlook: Spartans are looking to see growth from the experience that the roster brings. They only lost one player from the roster a year ago and retained their top five leading scorers Claire Seims, Katie Cummings, Sophia Sather, Cass Arendt, and Andrea Augeson.

Section 2AA

Chaska/Chanhassen Storm Hawks

Coach: Jackie Pieper

Season Outlook: The Storm Hawks will have to replace their top two scorers this season, losing one to graduation and the other transferring schools. They have the experience and veteran presence to do so although Sophia Klein is one of those experienced forwards who has the ability to step up and fill the shoes. Chaska/Chanhassen did retain their goalie, who faced a lot of shots in 2022-23, but kept a save percentage well over .900.

Eden Prairie Eagles

Coach: Steve Persian

Season Outlook: The Eagles are a young team, but they’ve been playing with each other for a couple of years now, so the chemistry should improve. They retain their top two scorers, Addy Mitchell, and Lauren Pottinger, Mitchell had double digit goals last season.

Holy Family Catholic Fire

Season Outlook: The Fire will have a very young team, heading into 2023-24 with just a couple seniors on the roster. They will have some big shoes to fill, but the Fire do have Josie Linn who had nearly 50 points last season, she was the team leader in both goals and assists. 

Minnetonka Skippers 

Coach: Tracy Cassano

Season Outlook: The Skippers bring back one of the best goalies in the state, Layla Hemp, who was amongst the states elite with GAA and save percentage. Minnetonka will have to fill the shoes of the top three scorers from last year, but Kendra Distad is in her senior season after scoring 30 points last season. 

New Prague Trojans 

Coach: Madison Drazan 

State Tournaments: 04, 05, 06, 08, 16.

Season Outlook: The Trojans will have a very experienced team in 2023-24, having 10 upperclassmen. They bring back their top scorer Ella Hansen who scored over 30 goals last season, leading the team. They also have more experience in net with two goalies who got playing time in 2022-23. 

Prior Lake Lakers

Season Outlook: The Lakers will have a void to fill with their 2022-23 top three scorers graduating, but they have experience with players like Clara Gillen who entered her senior season. Prior Lake does have their 2022-23 starting goalie back from last year, Olivia Hansen, who put up great numbers last season, sporting a save percentage of over .930. 

Shakopee Sabers 

Coach: Jamie Grossman  

State Tournaments: N/A

2022-23: 15-11-0

Top Returners: Hannah Grabianowski Jr./F (13-9-22), Allison Parker Sr./F (10-5-15), Callie Peterson Jr./D (2-10-12), Breklyn Skattum Sr./F (2-7-9), Lily Canny Jr./F (2-5-7), Ollie Sinnen Sr./G (3-4-0/3.71/.883).

Season Outlook: Shakopee will rely on a couple of upperclassmen after losing three of its top five scorers from a year ago. They will have Hannah Grabianowski, who looks to make a big step this year. Ollie Sinnen will see much more time in between the pipes this season, as she saw just a handful of games last year, winning three games. 

Waconia Wildcats 

Coach: Kim Abrahams 

State Tournaments: N/A

2022-23: 5-21-1

Top Returners: Annika Mielke Sr. (18-16-34), Mia Kelley Sr. (10-18-28), Ella Schluck Jr. (11-13-24), Kate Koschinska Fr. (4-4-8), Taylan Kamrath So. (4-2-6), Maya Pena Jr./G (0-7-0/4.40/.889).

Season Outlook: The Wildcats bring back Annika Mielke, who was the team’s leading scorer last season, scoring over 30 points. Waconia has all five of their top scorers from 2022-23, so the experience is there for the Wildcats, but they will have a new starting goalie Maya Pena who saw seven games last year. 

Section 3AA

Apple Valley Eagles

Coach: Don ‘Auggie’ Erdall

2022-23: 19-7-1

Top Returners: 

Season Outlook: Windom Area lost their 2022-23 leading scorer with Presley Dockter, but retained its following five leading scorers, including Marissa Becker. The Eagles were a young team in 2022-23, but this season they will have a good amount of juniors and seniors, so the maturity and veteran presence will be improved. 

Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders

Coach: Tony Scheid 

State Tournaments: 05, 08.

2022-23: 10-18-0

Top Returners: Abigail Broz Jr./F (13-11-24), Hope Hadac Jr./F (9-7-16), Delaney Schwab Jr./F (6-10-16), Cassandra Coffey Sr./D (7-8-15), Stella Hadac Jr./D (4-9-13), Grace Kemp So./G (10-17-0/3.16/.895).

Season Outlook: The Raiders will be a very experienced team this year, they still only have three seniors on the roster but it is stock-full of juniors and sophomores who have had game action in the last couple of seasons. Abigail Broz was the leading scorer last season, and she entered her junior season. CDH will have both of their goalies back who were between the pipes last year, including Grace Kemp who got most of the starting time last year. 

Eagan Wildcats

Coach: Jessica Ptachick 

State Tournaments: 97, 98, 00, 04, 08, 09, 12, 13, 18.

2022-23: 2-14-2

Top Returners: Sophia Sears Jr./F (7-10-17), Lily Anderson Sr./D (5-6-11), Natalie Heutmaker Jr./D (3-2-5), Kaitlyn Barry So./F (0-3-3), Keira Keogh Jr./D (0-2-2). 

Season Outlook: The Wildcats are going through somewhat of a rebuild on the roster, graduating ten seniors in 2023. They have a young roster but, with Sophia Sears, or Lily Anderson they have a good foundation of players who can give Eagan a spark. 

Eastview Lightning 

Coach: Herb Harvey 

State Tournaments: 15, 16, 17, 21.

2022-23: 6-20-1

Season Outlook: The Lightning had a very young team last year, so this season they bring in more experience and maturity. They bring back goalie Lila Hanson who had a GAA under three and a save percentage over .900 in 2023-24.   

Hastings Raiders

Season Outlook: Hastings has three of the top five scorers from 2023-24, Kyra Erickson, Madyn Hanson, and Jade Schauer are returning for another season after putting up over 15 points last season. The Raiders are also retaining Bree Balster, their top goaltender from last season, who had a save percentage of over .900

Lakeville North Panthers

Coach: Buck Kochevar 

State Tournaments: 02, 04, 10, 12, 13, 14, 23.

Season Outlook: The Panthers are regaining a good amount of players from last year, which after the season they had is a great thing. Addison Bowlby returns for her senior season after scoring over 50 points on the seasons leading her team. The Panthers also bring back their two goalies who both got starting time last year, so there is experience everywhere on the ice for North. 

Park of Cottage Grove Wolfpack

Season Outlook: The Wolfpack are a young team with good depth, and although they’re young, there is a lot of experience on the roster. Maggie Jensen is back for her senior season after being second on the team in scoring last season. 

Rosemount Irish

Season Outlook: The Irish caught fire in late 2022-23 earning their program a second state tournament appearance. They bring back Sophie Stramel and Cece Hanson, their top two scorers from last season, so there is great experience coming back for 2023-24. 

Section 4AA

East Ridge Raptors

Season Outlook: The Raptors have a new bench boss Dana Romaker, the roster for the new coming coach has a young but experienced roster. They will have some big shoes to fill, both offensively and in the net, losing their top four scorers and their two netminders who shared the crease last year. Allie Warner is a veteran senior defender who had a good year last season, scoring over 10 points. 

Gentry Academy Stars 

Coach: Monique Aanenson 

State Tournaments: 21, 22, 23 (Champs).

2022-23: 27-2-0

Top Returners: Skyler Salscheider Sr./D (6-12-18), Maiah Aanenson Sr./F (6-9-15), Ana Myers Sr./F (8-6-15), Kaitlin Roberts Sr./D (3-8-11), Haley Gray Jr./F (3-5-8), Belle Deutz Jr./G (12-12-3/ 1.85/.924). 

Season Outlook: Gentry Academy won their young program’s first state title in 2022-23 after their third straight tournament appearance. They did although lost a large chunk of their roster to graduation, the Stars lost nine of the top ten scoring leaders and two goalies from 2022-23. Even after losing so many players, they are still an experienced team with multiple seniors and juniors. Belle Beutz is set to get a lot more playing time between the pipes, she had a great season last year, winning 12 games and posting a GAA under two, while her save percentage was well above .900.  

 

Josie St. Martin leads the Stillwater Ponies, who are currently ranked No. 8 in Class AA.

Hill-Murray Pioneers

Season Outlook: The Pioneers bring back Grace Zhan who was one of the best goalies in the state returns for her senior year and could be a Senior Goalie award finalist to watch out for in 2023-24. Not only do they retain their top goalie, but also their top goal and point scorer, Chloe Boreen. 

North/Tartan Titans

2022-23: 13-12-1

Season Outlook: The Titans retain their top scorer Elli Volkers who scored nearly 30 points a season ago, they also have a plentiful number of seniors, so the experience is there for North/Tartan. 

St. Paul/Two Rivers Riveters

Season Outlook: The Riveters are returning their top five scorers from a season ago with Ella Johnson, Mia Cheesebrough, Evie Daly, Edy Halverson, and Kate Reubish. The bright back experience in the net, with both goalies who got playing time, back in between the pipes this year. 

Stillwater Area Ponies

Season Outlook: The Ponies have their eyes on the section final, and the state tournament this season with a lot of their top cast returning from last season. Josie St. Martin comes into the 2023-24 hockey season after leading the team in goals and points last year. They also have their starting goalie back, who sported a save percentage higher than .900 in 2022-23. 

White Bear Lake Bears

Centennial/Spring Lake Park Cougars

They also retained their top goalie from last year, Kaitlin Groess, who had a great year, averaging just over two goals allowed a game, and a save percentage of just under .930.

Champlain Park/Coon Rapids Bluebirds

Maple Grove Crimson

Season Outlook: Dani Strom returns for the Crimson, after having an incredible season, posting a GAA well under two and a save percentage amongst the state’s best. Strom is certainly a goalie to watch for the senior goalie of the year award. They also bring back Bella Shipley who was one of two 50-point scorers on Maple Grove last year. 

Mounds View/Irondale Mustangs 

Coach: Sami Miller  

State Tournaments: 97, 98, 99, 09, 10, 12, 13, 14.

Season Outlook: The Mustangs will have to rely on some young players as they lost some forwards and defensemen. They do have a good group of seniors to help bring experience on the ice. They could have a new starting netminder as Madeline Messner, who got some playing time last season, will see an increase in workload. 

North Wright County River Hawks  

Coach: Kaleigh (Hamann) Bean

Season Outlook: The River Hawks lose their top scorer, but retain the following four leaders, Adrienne Hansen, Dani Weiland, Eva Nelson, Roz Landkammer, and Lucy Felling. They will have to fill a hole in the net with their goaltender graduating, but this is a much more experienced squad in 2023-24.

Osseo/Park Center Stars

Season Outlook: The Stars are going to be a very young team, graduating eight seniors from last year. Their top scorer from last year Gabby Edlund was second on the team in scoring last season as an eighth grader. 

Rogers Royals

Season Outlook: The Royals come into the 2023-24 hockey season retaining three of five of last year’s leaders. Avery Achterkirch comes back for her senior season, after leading the team in scoring with over 30 points in 2022-23. 

Roseville/Mahtomedi Raiders

Season Outlook: The Raiders are returning a great amount of their top scorers from 2022-23, and their starting goalie, Lily Peterfeso, who had great numbers last season. Roseville/Mahtomedi has a good mix of seniors and juniors heading into the new season. 

Section 6AA

Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights

Season Outlook: The Red Knights had a good 2022-23 winning 17 games, and they retained a good portion of their core, including Ellie Stewart who led BSM last season. The three-way goalie rotation from last season will be down one netminder after Mia Rooney graduated, but Demetra Walsma and Elie Hancock will see much more time in the crease this season. 

Bloomington Jefferson Jaguars

Season Outlook: The Jaguars graduated seven players, including four defensemen, but they do have a good amount of seniors. Jana Lesch was the point leader for Bloomington Jefferson in 2022-23, scoring over 40 points. They also retain both their goalies, Rash and Golden, who saw playing time last year. 

Edina Hornets

Coach: Sami Cowger

State Tournaments: 09, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, 17 (Champs), 18 (Champs), 19 (Champs), 20, 21 (Champs), 22, 23.

2022-23: 23-5-2

Top Returners: Hannah Halverson Sr./F (19-27-46), Lorelai Nelson So./F (16-21-37), Whitney Horton Jr./F (14-23-37), Tori Anderson Jr./D (7-15-22), Cate McCoy So./F (8-8-16), Nora Hannan Jr./G (1-0-0/0.00/1.000).

Season Outlook: The Hornets are coming off their ninth straight state tournament appearance and section title. They didn’t lose too many top scorers with Hannah Halverson coming back for her senior season after leading the team in goals, assists, and points. The biggest loss was Senior Goalie of the Year Uma Corniea who graduated. They will roll with Nora Hannan and Reese McConnell in 2023-24.

Hopkins/Park Royals

Season Outlook: The Royals have a team with a good mix of seniors, juniors, and some sophomores, so there is a lot of room for improvement and a good amount of seniors for experience. They also brought back their starting goalie, Evelyn Osland, who got a lot of play time last season. 

Metro South Phoenix

Coach: Dan Bethiaume

Season Outlook: Ella Bond is returning for her sophomore season after ending the year second on the team in points with 27 points. They will have to fill the void in the net, but Millie Farrington did have some games under her belt, so experience is there. 

Robbinsdale Armstrong/Cooper      Wings

Season Outlook: The Wings lose their top scorer from graduation, but they retain Claire Riestenberg, who was second on the team in points and first on the team in goals. Emma Kahl is also a returning player, who got a lot of starting time last season. 

Wayzata Trojans

Season Outlook:  The Trojans will be a very young team after losing eight players to graduation and one to transfer. They will have to rely on some of the few seniors and juniors to propel them to a section championship. Ella Podiak and Malin Erickson are two goalies who split sometime last year. 

Section 7AA

Andover Huskies 

Coach: Melissa Volk 

State Tournaments: 14, 15, 18, 19, 20 (Champs), 21, 22 (Champs), 23.

2022-23: 27-4-0

Top Returners: Maya Engler Jr./F (19-21-40), Nora Sauer Sr./F (15-18-33), Cailin Mumm Sr./D (6-26-32), Courtney Little Jr./D (7-18-25), Hannah Christenson Jr./F (14-10-24). 

Season Outlook: It’s tough to replace players like Isa Goettl, or Ella Boerger, who was the team’s leading scorer, and Mrs. Hockey Award Winner, but the 2020 and 2022 state champions still have a good amount of depth on the team. Maya Engler is returning who was third on the team in points with 40 points, but they will have to rely on last year’s depth to fill some major holes that were left from graduation. 

Anoka 

Coach: Eric Thompson 

State Tournaments: 98, 00, 02, 03, 04, 05.

2022-23: 7-17-2

Season Outlook: Anoka has a good amount of their roster back from 2022-23, other than Ella Hennes, who led the team in points, but they have four of five of their top scorers back from a season ago. They also bring back both of their goalies, Gretchen Paaverud and Annika Olson who have a lot of experience in 2022-23.

Blaine Bengals 

Coach: Calla Athman

Season Outlook: The Bengals are returning four of five of their top scorers from last season, with Gracyn Knowles, Taylor Olson, Bella Brady, and Grace  Champman. They did lose their top scorer and starting goalie from 2022-23, which means Mandy Larson will take on a larger workload. 

Duluth Northern Stars 

Coach: Ali Randall

Season Outlook: The Stars bring back their top three-point scorers from 2022-23, along with their goalie Ella Brisbois. They already had a good year last season but with some of their top players maturing and gaining more experience, they could be a team to watch in the section.

Elk River/Zimmerman Elks

Season Outlook: The Elks will face some rebuilding with eight players graduating in 2023, but they still have their very good goalie tandem with Abby Huselid and Addi Brandt. Huselid had a very good .937 save percentage and Brandt sported a very good 2.02 GAA in 2022-23. 

Forest Lake Rangers

Season Outlook: The Rangers are going through a large roster turnover with 12 players graduating in 2023, leaving just four forwards, one defender, and one goalie returning for the 2023-24 season. Taylor Thompson is returning for her sophomore season and should see more time in the net. 

Grand Rapids/Greenway Lightning

Season Outlook: The Lightning are returning most of their 2022-23 scoring leaders, including one of the state’s best players in Mercury Bischoff, who had 73 points last season. They also bring back Riley Toivonen, who plays in net a lot for the Lightning, playing 17 games. 

Northern Tier Stars

Alexandria Cardinals

Season Outlook: The Cardinals may have lost their leading scorer, but they have Emma Ramstorf back after scoring 22 points as a defender. They also are gaining a great goalie with Lexi Metcalf, transferring in from Fergus Falls, she put up great numbers with a GAA of 1.31. They will have a very experienced goalie trio with all three goalies having playing experience. 

Bemidji Lumberjacks

Coach: Michael Johnson

Season Outlook: The Lumberjacks are a great mix of young and experienced players as they have a senior goalie who’s had time in the net the last couple of seasons and had a great year in 2022-23. Bailey Rupp was the leading scorer in 2022-23 with 28 points as an eighth grader. 

Brainerd/Little Falls Flying Warriors  

Coach: Tate Rusk 

State Tournaments: 18, 19, 22

Season Outlook: The Flying Warriors will have to rely on their new seniors to help fill the void of their two top scorers from last season. Peyton LeMieur is one of those seniors who could be in for a great year after scoring over 20 points last season. Ericah Folden will most likely see an increase in playing time this year after seeing a couple of games in 2022-23, and when she saw time she was excellent. 

Buffalo Bison

Coach: Ryan Huddy

Season Outlook: The Bison have a good group of returning players, and while they are a young team, they will have good experience with playing together the last couple of seasons. Ava Jovan is returning for her junior season after sporting a save percentage over .900 last season, so there is also good experience between the pipes. 

Moorhead Spuds

Season Outlook: The Spuds head into the 2023-24 hockey season after making its program’s fourth state tournament appearance, and first since 2006. Moorhead will be returning four of its top five scorers from last season, Kate Kosobud, Olivia Kortan, Taylor Brueske, and Ella Holm. They also will have the same goalie in the crease with Taylor Kressin, who racked up 22 wins in 2022-23. 

Roseau Rams 

Coach: Amanda Giles 

State Tournaments: 08, 10, 12, 14, 17, 20.

Season Outlook: The Rams look to be a well-experienced team after retaining all of last year’s roster. Payton Remick heads into the hockey season as a junior, leading the Rams in goals and points in 2022-23. The Rams will also have a similar face in net with Jada Pelowski returning for her senior season after posting great numbers last year.

Sartell/Sauk Rapids Stormin Sabres

Season Outlook: The Stormin Sabres head into the hockey season retaining four of the top five scorers from 2022-23. They bring back leading scorer Brayley VanDenBerg, who led the team in goals and points. Starting goalie Morgan Dorn will be back for her senior season, after starting nearly every game last season. 

St. Cloud Crush

They also have experience in net, as Abby Stevens returns after starting every game in 2022-23.
