Edina and Minnetonka clashed in last year’s state tournament. They are the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the state heading into section play.

Section menu has recipe for some good hockey in next two weeks

by Bryan Zollman and Dain Solberg

Last year’s state title game between powerhouse programs Edina and Hill-Murray could end up a likely scenario in 2025. Both teams are in the Top 5 in our LPH Rankings and both teams have the depth, skill and coaching to make the long run.

But at the top is the Skippers, who are looking for their first state title since 2013. The Skippers are loaded —  from between the pipes to the blue line to the far circles. They have depth and talent and have proven they are amongst a few teams who are expected to not just get to the state tournament, but get to the title game.

The Skippers may not have a superstar who racks up a ton of points, but that doesn’t always bode well when it comes to crunch time and you need nine forwards and six defensemen you can rotate without fear. Bella Finnegan is a Harvard-bound defender and team leader. Despite their No. 1 ranking, they will still have to get past Holy Family in a tough section. The Fire have been playing as well as anyone lately and should make the section title game to face off against their rivals from Minnetonka.

Hill-Murray and Woodbury have not met this season, but will likely meet in the section playoffs. Woodbury, who garnered the top seed in 4AA, has put together a great season and are a young team loaded with sophomores and juniors. If they don’t get past the Pioneers this season, look for them to make noise next season as well.

In Section 5AA Centennial/Spring Lake Park spent most of the first half of the season at the top of the rankings, but enter playoffs at No. 3 overall. They are considered a strong contender to go all the way for the first time in program history. They are strong from the net out and will be a force to be reckoned with, as they have been all season. Teagan Kulenkamp has been a strong offensive force on a deep squad.

Section 6AA is a two-horse race with Edina as the front runner, but with Benilde-St. Margaret’s as a strong contender to get to the state tournament and uproot the Section 6AA hold Edina has had. Both teams have deep rosters and high-compete levels.

Like Edina, Andover has had a stronghold on Section 7AA, a title that Grand Rapids/Greenway and star Mercury Bischoff hopes to end. The question will be if Grand Rapids/Greenway can penetrate the relentless defense of Andover and score enough to overcome the Huskies, who always have a strong roster. The other question will be if Andover can shut down the Lightning’s top line and Bischoff, who has accumulated more than 300 points in her career.

Mercury Bischof, Grand Rapids/Greenway.

In 8AA Moorhead just defeated Andover and is the favorite to get to state, but will have to get past Roseau, who they lost to Jan. 21 2-1 in OT. Again, another potential section final match up that should fill a barn full of hockey fans.

Can a team form the north get to state and make a run? Or will it be the usual suspects of Edina, Hill-Murray and Minnetonka?

This is, undoubtedly, the best hockey to witness.

Why? Because unlike the state tournament, it’s one and done. Teams that are expected to win don’t always win. And there is always an underdog out there lurking in the shadows, ready to crash some glass and make a dream come true.
